പതിനഞ്ചാം വയസില്‍ രണ്ടാനമ്മയുടെ ക്രൂരമായ പീഡനങ്ങളേറ്റു വാങ്ങി കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട വിശുദ്ധയാണ് പനേഷ്യ. തന്റെ ബാല്യകാല ജീവിതം കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഒരു വിശുദ്ധയുടെ സ്ഥാനം നേടിയെടുക്കാന്‍ പനേഷ്യയ്ക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇറ്റലിയിലെ നൊവാറയിലാണ് പനേഷ്യ ജനിച്ചത്. ജനിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ തന്റെ അമ്മയെ അവള്‍ക്കു നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. അനാഥയെ പോലെയാണവള്‍ വളര്‍ന്നത്. അമ്മയില്ലാത്തതിന്റെ വേദന ആ പിഞ്ചുമനസ് വല്ലാതെ അനുഭവിച്ചിരുന്നു. തന്റെ അച്ഛന്‍ രണ്ടാമതു വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഈ കുറവ് നികത്തപ്പെടുമെന്ന് അവള്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു. സ്വന്തമല്ലെങ്കിലും തനിക്ക് ഒരു അമ്മയെ കിട്ടുമല്ലോ. എന്നാല്‍, ആ മോഹങ്ങള്‍ വെറുതെയായി. നാടോടിക്കഥകളിലെ പോലെ ഒരു ക്രൂരയായിരുന്നു ആ സ്ത്രീ. പനേഷ്യയെ അവര്‍ എപ്പോഴും പീഡിപ്പിച്ചു. അഞ്ചു വയസുമാത്രം പ്രായമുള്ളപ്പോള്‍ പനേഷ്യയെ ദുരസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ആടുകളെ മേയ്ക്കാനായി അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞയയ്ക്കുമായിരുന്നു. അവള്‍ ശരിയായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നില്ലെന്നും ഒന്നിലും ശ്രദ്ധയില്ലെന്നും ആരോപിച്ച് അവര്‍ അവളെ ക്രൂരമായി മര്‍ദ്ദിച്ചു. ദൈവവിശ്വാസമില്ലാത്ത ആ സ്ത്രീക്കു പനേഷ്യ പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കുന്നതു കാണുന്നതു പോലും ഇഷ്ടമല്ലായിരുന്നു. എല്ലാ പീഡനങ്ങളും പനേഷ്യ സഹി...
